Lausanne Industrial Services (SiL) has sold to Sunrise the cable networks of ten neighboring municipalities of the Vaud capital. The city, which did not disclose the amount of the transaction, wishes to “centralize and strengthen” its multimedia activities in the Lausanne region.

The municipalities affected by this change are Prilly, Le Mont-sur-Lausanne, Epalinges, Jouxtens-Mézery, Bottens, Morrens, Brétigny-sur-Morrens, Cugy, Froideville, and Savigny. In total, more than 17,000 households, including businesses, are connected to the cable network that will be transferred to Sunrise, the City of Lausanne announced on Friday.

The transition will take place in stages from May to the end of 2024. Customers will be contacted, and Sunrise will offer “attractive offers” (fixed network, internet, TV) to individuals and companies “in continuity with the services offered so far by SiL,” assured the City of Lausanne. Cable operators also undertake to modernize cable networks and make them sustainable.

New Product

The City of Lausanne has mentioned a “strategic” decision that will allow it to “increase its resources to offer a more diversified offer to Lausanne residents with ‘bli bla blo’ products and to continue the development of the FTTH fiber optic network.”

The Vaud capital therefore promises new products, especially for senior citizens, at low prices, as well as for mobile phones.

In their joint statement, the City of Lausanne and Sunrise indicated that they “welcome” this collaboration, which “has ensured each partner in its development strategy while guaranteeing quality services for the customers concerned.”

“Incredible Advantages”

The two partners were hesitant to publicly announce the amount of the transaction. In a preliminary report sent to the City Council, the City continued to emphasize that this sale would generate “extraordinary profits in 2024, which were not budgeted.”

The costs associated with this network will completely disappear by 2025, while revenues will decrease as customers switch to Sunrise.

Regarding employees, retirees receive no compensation, and active employees receive proposals for internal transfers to SiL or City.

The discussions, particularly with unions in the South, “lead us to believe that a solution can be found for the entire staff this summer,” also reassuring the Lausanne authorities.
